Reefer Madness 2.0: The L.A. Medical Marijuana Saga

BMarijuana.com, July 26th, 2012

Lock your doors and hide your kids! Drugs are being peddled right in your streets resulting in numerous deaths per year which helps cultivate psychological sickness, homelessness, unemployment and a bevy of violence. Dig this – They can be legally grabbed at your local supermarket, pharmacy, liquor store or basically anywhere in the neighborhood. Booze, cigarettes and pills anyone?

With all these vices, why would marijuana get the blunt end of the stick? The L.A. City Council recently voted against medical marijuana storefronts – 14 to 0 – to put a ban on medical marijuana collectives within city limits; denying medical cannabis patients of their hydroponic grown bud. This unwarranted attack on previously law abiding dispensaries has been cultivating for years due to the debate over medical marijuana sales. During this time of unjust marijuana laws, Oakland’s own Harborside Health Center may have to shut their doors – being the globe’s biggest cannabis collective –despite protests from the medical marijuana community.

Medical Marijuana Advocates to Protest Obama

By Jon Walker, Just Say Now / Whiteout Press, July 16, 2012

Oakland. President Obama is planning to make a campaign stop at ground zero in his war against medical marijuana in a few days, and advocates for its legalization for medical use plan to show up in force. They’re angry at Obama for not only flip-flopping on the issue immediately after being elected, but escalating the federal government’s attacks to a level far surpassing even President Bush. Now, they hope to make the President change his policy, or pay a political price for the betrayal.

Pro-marijuana members of Obama’s base aren’t keeping quiet any longer over his broken camaign promises and war on legal medical marijuana clinics.

On Monday, July 23, President Obama will be in Oakland to raise money for his re-election campaign. There, according to the marijuana advocacy group Just Say Now, “He will be greeted by a large number of protesters who support medical marijuana.”

U.S. Attorney Attacks on Medical Cannabis Don’t Make Anyone Safer

By , California Progress Report / National Cannabis Industry Association, July 18, 2012

In the past, the U.S. Attorney General said his prosecutors should only go after medical cannabis providers that were clearly violating state laws. In the past, we had also been told that operations would focus on dispensaries that operated near schools and parks. But now Melinda Haag, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District was quoted last week as saying, “The larger the operation, the greater the likelihood that there will be abuse of the state’s medical marijuana laws, and marijuana in the hands of individuals who do not have a demonstrated medical need.”

She used that justification to go after Harborside Health Center, one of the most successful and respected providers around. And she didn’t go directly after them. After all, she only said there was a likelihood of abuse. Instead of charging them with violating laws, she threatened Harborside’s landlords with asset forfeiture. She told them they could lose their buildings because they had the audacity to make a business decision to rent to a legal dispensary.

Dishonesty in Medical Marijuana Debate

By Tammerlin Drummond, Oakland Tribune Columnist / Mercury News, 07/16/2012

There has been high drama in the debate over medical marijuana ever since federal authorities began cracking down on California’s pot dispensaries last October.

Last week, when federal authorities announced that they were filing forfeiture lawsuits to seize the properties that house the Harborside Health Centers in Oakland and San Jose, the operators of the cannabis dispensary featured on the reality TV show “Weed Wars,” held a news conference.

The star of the event was Jason David, who appeared in one of the “Weed Wars” episodes. David got teary as he talked about how medical marijuana had made such a difference in the life of his 5-year-old son, who suffers from seizures. Thanks to medical marijuana, he said his son had gone from needing two dozen pills a day to four. “After he had medical cannabis, it was the first time he went seizure free,” David said. “Imagine your kids having seizures every day, being in pain for hours crying and screaming.”

Editorial: Obama’s War On Medical Marijuana Just Got Even Uglier

One month ago, Eric Holder testified before Congress that the Dept. of Justice is only targeting medical marijuana businesses that violate their state’s laws. Anyone who didn’t realize it was a lie should be getting the message right about now.

Oakland Officials Slam U.S. Prosecutors Over Marijuana Crackdown

By Ronnie Cohen, Reuters / Yahoo! News, 7/12/2012

OAKLAND, California (Reuters) – Officials in the city of Oakland rebuked federal prosecutors on Thursday for seeking to shut down a medical marijuana dispensary that bills itself as the world’s largest in the latest clash over a federal cannabis crackdown in Western U.S. states.

The criticism came a day after federal prosecutors announced lawsuits seeking to seize two properties housing the Harborside Health Center, a California cannabis dispensary that gained attention when it was featured on the reality TV show “Weed Wars.”

“I am deeply dismayed that the federal government would seek to deprive Californians of this vital medicine,” Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement released by her office and read at a news conference held at City Hall by Harborside’s owners.
